By 1958 KOL had become a top-40 station, and in1965 KOL became

"Kolorful KOL, 13 Double O."  In 1975 KOL was sold and the call letters were changed (for a period of time) to KMPS with a country music format.

Salem Communications purchased KOL and on January 1st, 2002, KOL, began operating a 1000 watt transmitter from temporary facilities installed aboard the 175 foot cargo ship, the "Coastal Ranger," in Seattle’s Elliott Bay. It was the only licensed broadcast station operating in the United States aboard a ship.

An application was filed with the FCC for a new 50,000 Watt replacement facility located at the Port of Tacoma, which KOL began transmitting from on Friday, November 3, 2006.
